Reef Support

We’re on a mission to solve one of our planet’s greatest challenges: preserving and restoring coral reefs — at scale.

Our Story

Two friends, a thousand dollars, one big idea

Coral Vita started on a back porch in New Haven. Sam Teicher and Gator Halpern were grad students at the Yale School of the Environment when they met and forged a friendship over a shared passion for the ocean and the belief that there’s a better, faster, and bigger way to combat global coral reef degradation – and that creating a mission-based business is the way to achieve that vision.

From winning Prince William’s Earthshot Prize to being named Forbes 30 Under 30 Social Entrepreneurs to raising the world’s first-ever Series funding round for a coral restoration company, they are determined to do whatever it takes to ensure coral reefs survive and thrive for future generations by demonstrating for-profit for-nature for-good’s transformative potential.

Austin Martin

Chief Operations Officer

Austin Martin

Austin Martin brings a wealth of experience and a dynamic leadership style shaped by over 20 years in the controlled environment agriculture, food, and downstream energy sectors. With a strong track record of guiding both early-stage startups and major public and private companies, Austin has held executive roles across operations, supply chain, sales & marketing, merchandising, and R&D—helping teams thrive and organizations scale with purpose.

Throughout his career, Austin has led high-growth, impact-driven companies, including leadership positions at Target, Aldi, Shamrock Foods, and Delek US. Most recently, as President & COO, he helped transform a controlled environment agriculture company from a handful of employees into the largest in its industry, expanding across the U.S., Europe, and the Middle East. As CEO, he then guided the company through a successful reorganization, positioning it for its next chapter of growth.

What sets Austin apart is his ability to build and inspire high-performing teams while navigating the complexity of fast-scaling businesses. From food production and supply chain management to retail strategy and marketing, Austin’s expertise spans every layer of the food ecosystem.

He holds an MBA from Vanderbilt University and a B.A. in World Business and German Language from the University of Tennessee—and brings a global perspective and thoughtful leadership to everything he does.

Co-Founder & Chief Reef Officer

Sam Teicher

A DC kid, born and raised, Sam saw his first coral reef when he was 6 and started scuba diving as soon as he was old enough at 13.

After graduating from Yale College, he served as the Chief Operating Officer for ELI Africa, where he had his first experience with coral farming. He previously interned for the White House Council on Environmental Quality’s Climate Preparedness team and served as a fellow for the Global Island Partnership, co-authored Sustainable Development Goal 14: Life Below Water, and is a member of the Coral Restoration Consortium’s Advisory Board.

Sam is an optimistic DC sports fan, a fairly mellow rugby player, and a PADI Rescue-certified scuba diver. He leads on fundraising, brand, partnerships, and government relations for Coral Vita.

Co-Founder & President

Gator Halpern

Gator grew up in San Diego, spending as much time as he could at the beach. He launched his first company in high-school and has been building projects ever since; developing programs in Brazil, Peru, and South Africa.

He studied environmental science at Pomona College and has published research exploring the environmental impacts of various aquaculture and agricultural systems. He was a fellow at the World Wildlife Fund Global Marine Program, was named a United Nations Young Champion of the Earth, and is a Summit Fellow.

Gator is a Liverpool FC fan, emulating Steven Gerrard on the pitch. He drives R&D, technology deployment, science, and industry leadership for Coral Vita.

Our Solution

For Good. For Nature.
For profit.

We’ve created a new model of reef restoration — one that’s built for impact and powered by revenue. Because mission-based business solutions can solve environmental problems better than NGO, academic, or government-led initiatives.
