Position Overview:
We are seeking a Coral Technician, Level 1 to join our staff on Grand Bahama. You will be responsible for the maintenance, cleaning and care of coral species in a controlled land-
based coral farm environment. Your role will ensure that coral health and farm conditions remain optimal for growth, reproduction and overall sustainability. You will perform routine
cleaning tasks on a variety of coral species, ensure that equipment is cleaned and stored appropriately, assist with fabrication, and any other duties as deemed necessary by the farm
leadership group.
Key Responsibilities:
Coral Cleaning and Maintenance:
- Clean structures to remove algae, detritus and debris, without damaging coral tissue.
- Remove unwanted organisms (invasive species, parasites or predators) from coral surfaces using specialized tools.
- Ensure proper handling of coral during the cleaning process to prevent stress or damage.
- Ensure compliance with described methodologies and protocols surrounding coral health and care at all times.
Coral Health Monitoring:
- Inspect corals regularly for signs of disease, bleaching of other stress indicators.
- Report any abnormalities or concerns to the Farm Manager, Team Leads or Aquaculture team.
- Participate in Coral Propagation and restoration efforts where necessary.
Facility Maintenance:
- Assist in maintaining the physical infrastructure of the farm, including tanks, structures and equipment.
- Perform routine maintenance and cleaning of work areas to ensure a safe and clean environment.
Safety and Environmental Compliance:
- Adhere to safety protocols to prevent accidents and injuries on the farm.
- Follow best practices for handling and disposing of chemicals, tools and waste materials.
- Ensure the farm operates within environmental guidelines to minimize impact on surrounding ecosystems.
Collaboration and Communication:
- Work alongside other farm staff to ensure the smooth running of daily operations.
- Communicate effectively with the Team Leads to report on the status of the coral farm, including any challenges or concerns.
Training and Learning:
- Stay up to date with current coral farming practices, marine conservation techniques and emerging technologies.
- Complete facility training manual.
Key Skills & Qualifications:
Experience:
- Previous experience in marine aquaculture, reef care or coral cleaning is preferred, but not mandatory.
- On-site training will be provided.
Education:
- A background in Marine Biology, Aquaculture, Environmental Science or a related field is beneficial.
Skills:
- Knowledge of coral species and their care requirements.
- Ability to identify and address common coral diseases or stress symptoms.
- Strong attention to detail and the ability to follow protocols for maintaining coral health and farm operations.
- Good physical condition and ability to perform tasks in a marine environment.
- Positive attitude and dependable.
- Willingness to learn.
Physical Demands:
- Comfortable with physical labour and repetitive tasks in an open-air environment.
- Ability to lift up to 25kg (55lbs) and work in varying weather conditions.
Working Environment:
- There may be exposure to the elements, including sun exposure, saltwater and occasionally operating in rough conditions.
- The work requires flexible hours, including weekends or early mornings depending on the needs of the farm.
